As the name suggests, this is originally a Sardinian pasta shape, usually accompanied by a sausage-based sauce but also suitable for other tasty recipes.

The gnocchi produced by Pastificio dei Campi, Sardinia, are a shorter version of the Gragnano PGI pasta. It comes from the centuries-old Sardinian peasants' culture, which heavily relied on wheat cultivation for its diet.

The original name of the dumplings is Malloreddus, derived from the Sardinian-Campidanese term Malloru, which means "bull." Another possibility is from the Latin mallolus, which means a log of pasta or dumpling.
