Pasta is the unquestionably best known and most exported Italian specialty in the world, and for centuries it has found in Gragnano, with its mild and slightly humid climate, the ideal place for its production. It is as far back as the sixteenth century that we have the first evidence of a proto-pasta industry in our area, destined to grow to such an extent that, as early as the eighteenth century, it led to an urban reorganization with the creation of the sinuous and wide Via Roma, apt to favor the passage of the humid sea breeze and to maximize exposure to the sun, ideal conditions for drying pasta. By the early 19th century the town of Gragnano was already world famous for the quality of its macaroni, counting at that time more than 70 pasta factories, destined to become 100 by mid-century.
The twentieth century was the century of industrial processing, technological innovations and increased production. With the new millennium came the fruits of so much passionate work: since 2013 Gragnano Pasta has been protected by the I.G.P. mark, which certifies its exceptional production history at the European level.
